There are many ways to use a noren. In Japan, it is commonly hung at the entrance of homes or shops to provide privacy and partially conceal the interior from view.
It can also be used to divide spaces where there is no door, or to conceal shelves and storage areas.
The design is printed on polyester with a linen-like texture. The fabric itself is dyed.
The fabric is loosely woven, allowing the silhouette of a person on the other side of the noren curtain to be seen through it.
